Design, Display, and Call Quality Any discussion of the Note Edge will revolve around the unique, curved screen, but from every other side, it looks nearly identical to the original Note 4 $ at AmazonOpens in a new window . You get the same faux-leather plastic back and coated-metal frame, but the polished chamfering is limited to the front side. It feels a bit more plasticky to me, but Samsung assures me that they're made from the same material. At by by inches HWD and ounces, the Note Edge is shorter and lighter, but noticeably wider than the Note 4. The extra width and exposed Edge screen made me anxious about frequent accidental touch input, but palm-rejection works better than expected. The Power button has also been moved to the top edge, which I hate—it makes putting a phone this tall to sleep a frequent repositioning hassle. Samsung lists the display as a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED panel, but that requires some more explanation. First, the Quad HD+ refers to the resolution of the flat area of the display, 2,560 by 1,440 pixels, and the curved Edge screen, which adds an extra 160 pixels of width. The spec refers to the entire display, including the curved Edge screen. In reality, the flat area of the display measures roughly diagonally. Depending on where you start measuring and what interface elements are showing, the Edge's screen extension adds another few tenths of an inch, with some overlap on the flat part of the display. The display quality is still excellent, matching the Note 4's vivid colors and brightness, but it's noticeably smaller when held side by side, and there's a bit more rainbow-inducing refraction on the actual glass. It's still plenty roomy, but makes you feel like you're using an extra-large phone without a proportionally extra-large display. Similar Products Like the Note 4, the Note Edge supports the full range of T-Mobile GSM, UMTS, and LTE networks. T-Mobile's making strides with its speedy LTE network, but it still lags behind Verizon in terms of coverage, as we found in our latest Fastest Mobile Networks tests. The Note Edge also supports the Download Booster feature, which supplements weaker Wi-Fi connections with LTE to improve speeds. It's useful for spotty coffee shop Wi-Fi, but be aware that it'll count against your data caps. Call quality was good in my tests, but nothing to write home about. The earpiece gets loud enough to cut through distractions and transmissions through the mic are clear and easy to understand. Noise cancellation wasn't impressive, letting in more environmental noise than the Nexus 6. The Note Edge supports T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling and HD Voice features. The Note Edge's battery is slightly smaller than the Note 4's 3,000mAh to 3,220mAh and it's also technically driving more pixels, even though the display has a smaller area. In a battery rundown test, where we streamed a YouTube video over LTE with screen brightness set to max, the Note Edge lasted for 6 hours, 15 minutes. That's still a solid result, but not nearly as impressive as the Note 4's 7 hours, 56 minutes. Performance and Edge Panels With the exact same quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 SoC, the Note Edge turned in basically identical performance to the Note 4. Synthetic benchmarks confirm anecdotal evidence that the additional Edge screen software doesn't add any strain the Snapdragon 805 can't handle. Games like Asphalt 8 played smoothly and I couldn't find any popular app that had compatibility issues as a result of the Edge screen. Beyond the striking, waterfall visual effect, Samsung did a reasonably good job at integrating the Edge screen into its already bloated software. There are three main functions for the Edge screen notifications, app shortcuts, and Edge panels, which can be thought of as apps or widgets made for the Edge screen. The idea here is that offloading incoming notifications and other functions to Edge panels is less intrusive and allows for instantly accessible information from anywhere. You can pick and choose which panels you want and a quick flick cycles through active panels. The app shortcut panel is active by default whenever you're on the home screen, but collapses down into a black line with a personalized message when you launch an app or browse the app drawer. Once in an app, you can summon the full-sized panels with a quick swipe in from the side, and once you start interacting with your main app on the flat portion of the screen, the Edge panels collapse again. There's no limit to how many apps shortcuts you can place on the scrollable Edge panel, and you can even create folders that reside within the panel. Notifications are handled by the Briefing panel, which also shows the time and local weather. For calls, instead of a pop-up over the top quarter of the screen like on the Note 4, the Edge screen shows the incoming caller, while a swipe up or down can answer or decline. Texts show the sender and a preview of the message, but the notification isn't actionable. Dig into the Edge settings and you can choose which app notifications get access to the Edge screen. There's some redundancy here, though, since you'll still have to clear non-actionable notifications from the normal pull-down notification shade. Some first-party Samsung apps smartly move navigation and other control elements to the Edge screen, but it's not like you're getting added functionality. Everything did, at least, work smoothly and as advertised in my tests. The Edge screen can also act as a night-time friendly alarm clock, showing the time and date with the screen off. It's similar to Moto Display on the Moto X, but it's not nearly as full featured. You can swipe along the Edge to toggle panels straight from night clock mode and see notification badges for phone calls or texts, but it's not as easily accessible as Motorola's solution. It's not that the Edge screen isn't useful. I just don't think it adds much to the experience. I've never found the normal notification system all that intrusive, and while quick info at a glance is nice, it's far from a revelation—I can just as easily swipe down the notification shade and swipe it back up without leaving most apps. I also wish it did more, like offer shortcuts that launch directly into split-window mode, and I'm not convinced that enough people will buy this phone to compel Samsung or third-party developers to devote any resources to expanding functionality here. There are only 15 options for Edge panels at launch and I wouldn't consider any of them must haves. Conclusions Samsung has proven that it'll try pretty much anything. Sometimes that pushes the industry towards new and exciting frontiers, and other times it leaves onlookers scratching their heads. The Note Edge is textbook Samsung innovative for innovation's sake. The concept has some potential, but I'm skeptical about its prospects for realization. If you go by the assumption that the Edge screen will more or less do what it does now and not much more, save your money and get the $750 Note 4—you won't miss the Edge screen.
